From a domain name to a production system
WebsiteHosting.com is an interactive learning environment for the infrastructure behind every website — domains, name resolution, TLS, HTTP, servers, applications, databases, caching, email, security, and production operations.
The goal is not to memorize configuration recipes. It is to build a model of the system that is precise enough to predict what happens next, explain why it happened, and debug it when reality disagrees.
01
Each layer has its own state, timing, failure modes, and boundaries. Learning the stack means learning how those layers interact — and how to tell which layer is responsible when something changes or breaks.
02
Commit to what you think the system will do before seeing the result.
Change the state, move through time, and inspect what each component knows.
Replace a memorized answer with a causal model you can state precisely.
Create the failure on purpose, then change the system so the failure disappears.
Apply the same mechanism to a different situation instead of repeating a recipe.
03
You should be able to change parameters, inspect system state, move through time, create a failure, compare competing explanations, and see whether your mental model survives a new scenario.
No decorative simulations.
No magical “propagation” explanations.
No hidden jump from configuration to outcome.
Every important result should have a visible cause.
04
The curriculum is designed as one connected system rather than a collection of unrelated tutorials. A concept introduced early should remain useful later — when the subject becomes deployment, failure, recovery, performance, or production change management.
05
By the end, you should be able to look at a running website and explain not only what is configured, but what each component believes, what can become stale, what can fail independently, what changes are safe, and what evidence you need before calling a system ready.
